10 Weird Facts About Ted Bundy’s Childhood
This is the second article in a series on serial killers. How does a killer become a killer? Once upon a time, they were born, held, named, taken pictures of. What kind of childhood helps to produce serial killers? In knowing this, perhaps these conditions could be avoided…
Theodore Robert Bundy was born November 24, 1946 and was executed on January 24, 1989. He fits the typical “American serial killer” role to a tea — white, male, in his 20’s or 30’s with an atypical childhood. He went on a three year killing spree killing numerous young women. He eventually confessed to 30 murders although many suspect that the number was higher and some suspect the number was much much higher. He used his good looks to lure victims and often pretended he was injured or was an authority figure such as a police officer. He was found guilty of 30 murders of young women and was sentenced to death. His last words were: “I’d like you to give my love to my family and friends.” Then, he was executed in the electric chair.
What kind of an upbringing would allow a child to turn into a man such as Ted Bundy? While I am neither condoning nor belittling the agonizing pain of his victim’s and their families, such behaviour does give one pause for thought. Are some people born evil? Are they raised to become evil? I believe it’s a little of both. Bundy definitely lead a different childhood. Here are ten weird facts about young Ted Bundy’s life.
-
Ted Bundy was not his birth name.
He was born Theodore Robert Cowell and remained so for a few years. After he moved to Tacoma with his mother, she changed his last name to Nelson. Within a year after that, his mother Louise Cowell met Johnnie Culpepper Bundy. They later married and Johnnie Bundy legally adopted Theodore and changed his last name to Bundy.
-
Ted Bundy thought his mother was his sister for many years.
He was born at a home for unwed mothers. To avoid the social stigma of having an illegitimate grandchild born to a young mother, his grandparents claimed him as their own. They told young Ted that Louise was his sister and not his mother. He did not discover the truth of his maternal parentage until at least the end of high school or perhaps in the first couple years of college.
-
No one is really sure who his biological father was.
His mother gives two different stories for this. The name on his birth certificate was Lloyd Marshall. However, she later spoke of being seduced by a war veteran named Jack Worthington. There is one other option, however. Some members of Bundy’s family think that his grandfather may also be his biological father. He was mentally unstable, violent and abusive. He would also fly into a rage if anyone spoke of Ted’s biological father.
-
He showed violent tendencies as young as three years old.
His Aunt Julia, Louise’s younger sister, recalls incidents of laying down for a nap in her home and waking up to find knives surrounding her and a smiling three year old Bundy at her side. This paints an eerie, strange picture of a toddler arranging knives around his sleeping aunt.
-
Bundy’s grandfather (who he thought was his father and indeed may have been) tortured animals.
Bundy describes incidents of his grandfather Samuel abusing the family dog. He also claimed that Samuel would swing neighbourhood cats around by their tails. Ted himself has been said to torment animals with knives. He would mutilate animals with the knives which seemed to fascinate him so much.
-
Young Ted was active in the Methodist Church and even served as Vice President of the Methodist Youth Fellowship.
He was also involved in the Boy Scouts of America club. Although later he stated: “I didn’t know what made people want to be friends. I didn’t know what made people attractive to one another. I didn’t know what underlay social interactions.” He was often described as shy and introverted at this age.
-
His criminal activities began before he finished high school.
He was a habitual liar. He compulsively stole and shoplifted. He later claimed that he was also involved in voyeurism at a young age specifically by peeping into windows. He was arrested twice as a juvenile but the records were later expunged.
-
He majored in Psychology in University and graduated with a degree in 1972.
He started taking classes upon his graduation from high school in 1965 in Psychology and Oriental Studies. After a serious girlfriend broke up with him for his lack of ambition, he rededicated himself to Psychology and earned his degree in 1972. He was well liked by his professors and graduated with honors. He started dating a woman with a child (relationship lasted six years) while concurrently and covertly re-establishing his relationship with his girlfriend who dumped him. After a year of their born again relationship, he proposed and she accepted. Two weeks later, he dumped her and began his killing spree. He would not break up his six year relationship to another woman until he was arrested for kidnapping in 1976. There are many who say that most of his victims looked like the girlfriend who original dumped him (long dark hair parted in the middle).
-
He volunteered at a suicide crisis center alongside a now famous crime author, Ann Rule.
As a part of his psychology classes, he volunteered at a suicide crisis center. Imagine, a serial killer talking people out of killing themselves. Completely bizarre. One of his co-workers and friends was Ann Rule who is now a well known crime writer. She was researching the crimes Ted committed all the while not knowing it was her friend who committed them. She later published a book called : “The Stranger Beside Me” detailing her relationship with Ted and the numerous crimes he was convicted of.
-
Ted was heavily involved with the Republican.
In 1968, Ted managed the Seattle office of Nelson Rockefeller’s presidential campaign and attended the Republican Convention in Miami. After his graduation in 1972, he went to work for the state Republican Party. He was later involved in a minor scandal when the democrats found out that Ted had been following one of them around posing as a college student and taping their speeches and reporting the information back to his Republican office.
Ted Bundy’s journey to adulthood had many odd facets. Perhaps a closer examination of serial killer’s pasts can lead to their earlier detection and possibly even prevent serial killers from killing.

Anybody would feel affended by hearing this. I’m a girl, too. But, thats dumb to say. Ted Bundy was an inciteful human being, with a big temper. If he could’ve controled that a little better, he would have been a very succesful man.

Ted bundy is actually quite puzzling. He was very attracktive and could have had any one but instead he desided to murder. He actually was married and has a 20 yr old daughter somewhere out there

Bundy was a sick man just like his father/grandfather. He looked up to him and therefore followed the same steps. We create our children and we teach our children. When i read articles like this one it only makes me want to be a better mother. Lets all learn from this article and be better mothers and or daughters to our parents that have tought us well.

In my studies at Harvard Medical School, I found out that Mr. Bundy was just a man with an obtuse addiction to the female gender. I want you all to know that Theodore had a rough childhood so he is not at fault. Females across the United States were Theodore’s icons. Don’t judge a man with needs. “Jesse” had a very imaculate point, although I have done the research and personally met Theodore in person. He is a pretty nice guy and we played cards together. He is very good at blackjack!
Paula Mitchell Bentley, posted this comment on Nov 12th, 2008
Wow, this is really getting some comments. Um, to say that he LOVED girls a little too much is nearly as crazy as Mr. Bundy himself was. He killed at least 30 women. Killed, not loved. And to the “Dr.” on the last post…Ted Bundy has been dead for nearly 20 years so to say that “he is a pretty nice guy” is a little strange. People with rough childhoods turn out fine all the time. People are responsible for their behaviour and actions. You can’t blame a life of killing women on your mom.
Dr. Jordan Kastein MD, posted this comment on Nov 12th, 2008
I am quite sure that “Paula Mitchell Bentley” does not have a direct insight quite as my professional mind does about Mr. Theodore Bundy. Did she go to Harvard? No! Did she meet him? No! And that is unreasonable to assume that I could not have met him due to the fact that he died “nearly 20 years ago”.

These comments are so disturbing on sooooo many levels. He was not a loving man he was a maniac. He stalked, and killed innocent young women. Ted Bundy was a nut from word go. I dont believe in the death penalty but that does not make this man a martyr. His poor daughter is also a victim of his. If you love girls you have more than one girlfriend or you may spend little extra time at a local strip club you dont rape and kill.
Patty Cowell, posted this comment on Nov 14th, 2008
Ted Bundy is my distant cousin…and i do not appreciate the comments that *Shannon* has written………. you dont know the circumstances and stress Ted was under. Ted’s rapings were not so called “rapeings” i bet those girls were willing!!! that just doesnt sound like my cousin Teddy

Why is it that I’m the only one that is actually making comments under my own name that you can click on? I’m sure that the above poster is a “Dr.” who met the serial killer Ted Bundy and coincidentally, Ted’s cousin is also writing here.
My point is this: Ted Bundy was a serial KILLER who RAPED women. Imagine that this was your mother, or sister, or friend that was killed. Ted Bundy brutally killed and raped these women. No one forced him to. His childhood does not excuse his behavior. Nothing, I repeat NOTHING, makes this behavior acceptable. Did these women also kill themselves “Patty Cowell”? I know, they threw themselves at him and then committed suicide, right? Maybe you are related to him because you’re clearly loony too. Oh, and “Dr.” Kastein — get a life. Perhaps Ted Bundy WAS a nice guy in your opinion. However, he definitely IS not a nice guy. You’d think someone highly educated would be able to spell correctly and use the right tense in their writing. I guess Harvard isn’t what it used to be.
I’m sick of this all. If you have something to say, use your real name. Create an account here so that I can click on it and see some of your other great ideas. I’m probably just encouraging all you psychos by even responding to this but I just find it all so sick and disturbing. Say something useful or STFU! Thank goodness for the delete option. I’ll be using it frequently here, I’m afraid.

To comment on ms. Cowells comment We are all under stress I have plenty of stress. But I have never killed another human being. I have had unrequited love and yes it hurts but again I have never killed another human being. And the innocent ladies that lost their lives in the Chi omega house were sleeping in their beds it is kind of hard to throw yourself at someone if you are asleep. Furthermore my comments were not that harsh considering the man that ted was. Like I said before I dont believe in the death penalty. Because I am sure that you too have suffred a loss. But at the same time this man was not sane and NO amonunt of stress can justify the heinous way in which he killed those poor innocent girls. Ms. Bently thank you for being the only sane person on this forum!!

You’re definitely not obsessed, just fed up with the psychos. I appreciate you and the comments you’ve left here. Don’t let haters bring you down. Everybody,
just to be clear the supposed “doctor” and the supposed “relative” are fakes.
Even though there are outside factors that contribute to whether or not someone will kill we cannot excuse the behavior, particularly in the case of serial killers. I am a professional, unlike the pretend doctor here. It’s a great topic. Just be very skeptical of the fakers above and the ones that inevitably will follow this comment.

here’s a comment on the actual article…the writer says, maybe future cases can be avoided if we know things about the childhood- I am a psychologist and work with children. Therefore, I am committed to the idea that people can change with intervention. Otherwise, I’d have no job. However, the antisocial personality has a strong genetic component – some believe there is an empathy gene that is lacking…it certainly sounds like the grandfather was antisocial…if the story about him being 3 and putting knives around his aunt is true, then it seems these behaviors began early and speak to the genetics of the condition. and I’m sure watching the behavior of the grandfather didn’t help, and that would be an environmental effect- a model of antisocial behavior. At any rate, my thought is I wonder what really could have been done for him. and I feel that in these rare cases, where rehabilitation seems so unlikely-the death penalty is warranted, if it is done quickly, as I don’t want my taxes to pay for his meals or appeals
Mr. Smith, posted this comment on Apr 9th, 2009
Bundy was a sociopath with a handsome face. As a sociopath, he felt no empathy for others. But over the course of his life he learned to act like he cared. This acting falls short of being normal. This falling short shows itself as manipulation of others. Bundy was absolutely excellent as manipulating others. FYI, most folks in prisons are to some degree sociopathic. They don’t understand what the big deal is about the crime they committed. They just don’t get it. Thus, they blame society for their prison terms (”What did I do that I deserve this?”) The are also very good at manipulating others.

ok everyone. thiss is really stupid. honestly. STOP FIGHTING!!!! it is very very stupid to argue over this! ted is DEAD! yes i agree. what he did is horrible and hard to belive. but now that he is dead…there isnt much you can do about it. i am in church…..and i belive what he did is wrong. my youth group watched a biography about him and what we did. yes…it did scare us. but it made us more aware of our world and the people who are in it. I belive what he did is terrible….and he is insane. He is not all there. but our youth pastor asked us…..if he were to do something like that to our family….do we forgive him?? jesus died for ALL of us. we dont deserve to live eternally with him. but he chose to die for us. so…because we are ALL sinners and we ALL do NOT deserve his mercy…..who are we to judge?? it is not our place to judge him. so……be quiet about it. our opinions are said. he is dead. end of story. all we can do now is learn from it. by the way….the comment said from Rambo??? its not called for. im sorry. thats all i can say. and ya…..i am a 14 year old girl. and trust me….i know how difficult it is to forgive someone like that. i know from experience. trust me. thats all that needs to be said. im not saying anu=ymore….because i said what i wanted. im not here to start drama. im just here to say we cant judge him. we are all sinners and we can all be forgiven
All sin, no matter how “small,” is against an infinite and eternal God, and is therefore worthy of an infinite and eternal penalty. Further, this is no sin too “big” that God cannot forgive it. Jesus died to pay the penalty for sin (1 John 2:2).

Ted Bundy was a person who suffered from an antisocial personality. There is nothing in the WORLD that will justify his behavior! He killed many women for pleasure and if you don’t think theres something wrong with that, you need take yourself to a mental hospital AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!!!!!!!

Just one question pertaining to the professionals in this forum, is it likely that Theodore Bundy’s environment in its self have created the thinking process that he believed to be right? It has been stated that an individual can be institutionalized from staying in a prison so long that they grow on the lifestyle, but what I’m wondering is if society can do the same thing to a person that a prison can also do to an individual?

Wow. What’s really heinous and indescribable are some of these comments. Really, what has the world come to? I’m a grade 12 student in Canada, and I’ve recently been recearching for a law project concerning Ted Bundy. I’ve discovered some very very disturbing things not just of Bundy himself, but of his FANS AND FOLLOWERS. There are actually FAN SITES dedicated to Bundy, where it is quite common for females to protest their sick fantasies of a Bundy-style rape and murder on themselves! The fact that anyone would first of all conjure up these disturbing ideas, and second that they spend the time creating fake accounts on websites, claiming they are a doctor (who can’t even spell correctly, use proper punctuation or use proper homonyms) IS BEYOND SICK. I am a christian man myself, and I am aware the bibles states that we should not judge ‘lest ye be judged’, but I am unable to hold my judgement on this issue. Where has common sense gone? It makes me truly sick.

actually…most people who actually met the man wouldve probably concidered him a very nice charming man….BECAUSE HE WAS A SOCIOPATH! It’s sort of a hallmark of that particular personallity disorder that they are very charming, likable people…..and they appear that way because they also tend to be very persuasive liars…my grandmother grew up in the north end of Tacoma, she played tackle football with Bundy and he was the paperboy for the neighborhood, granted my grandmother always got the creeps from him, other family members of mine were actually friends with the man. people get hung up on the crimes serial killers commit and dont even think about the fact that they are typically seem like very normal, charming, intellegant individuals! do you really think he would’ve been able to viciously murder as many woman as he did without getting caught if he acted like the monster that he really was deep down inside? NO! If he acted like the nutter he is, he wouldve gotten caught fairly easily, but he didnt, because nobody suspected that such a charming, together man could do the things he did………So yes ‘Dr.’ Ted Bundy probably seemed for all the world like a very cool guy, very friendly and outgoing……but he was faking it…guaranteed…his personallity was just another tool he used to commit the atrocites he did…..Its a very scary thought, but Bundy was right….when he said that people like him never seem like the monsters they really are and are your sons, husbands, brothers, friends, neighbors…..thats the scary part of a serial killer, they are rarely people you would ever pin as a monster, they are people you would never be suspicious of, and thats what makes them so dangerous

Wow, the inflamed comments on this board amaze me. I have long wondered…why the fascination with Ted Bundy? Interest in him seems to grow over time rather than fade away. I myself am interested in psychology–what makes people behave in certain ways? I have done some reading about Ted Bundy.
I believe he did indeed have a conflicted unsettling childhood. He seemed to get agitated whenever questioned about his real father. I think those early issues are at the root of his psychopathy. It is my hunch that Samuel Cowell was his real father. It seems to me Ted was warped from birth. Yet, despite his sick family history he was responsible for his deranged acts of murder and assault. Ted deserved life in prison (I don’t believe in capital punishment) The thing that makes me sad: all the lovely young women whose lives were cut short for no reason. And, at the same time I know Ted could have been such an asset to society if he hadn’t been a sociopath. He was smart, charismatic and could have done a lot of good. Some day I wish Louise Bundy would tell the world the real story of his birth and early years.

What’s up with the obsession for Ted Bundy? Can’t believe i just read all the comments, and i agree with Lauren Kelly. Anyone who actually believes Ted Bundy was a nice person, from having met him or otherwise should think again. Common sense dictates that you are not nice if you murder people. You prove niceness by kind actions, not charmingness and feigned niceness. I’m interested in him because I’ve never seen a sociopath so manipulative, and deceitful except in movies. Awesome movie i may add; silence of the lambs. But it also puports to prove my case: ted bundy is not a nice man so STFU you’re scaring me.

i honestly dont see what is wrong with what he did. sure he raped and killed womenand had sex with the boies afterward but that was the only thing that satisfied his needs , he enjoyed it ,and just because the law says that it is illegal he gets executed ? at least he had standards , unlike most other serial killers ted bundy chose to prey on attractive women because he got off on it and unlike other high profile serial killers he had class and standards .
