Five Reasons to Pick Nook Over Amazon Kindle Two
Barnes & Noble has recently introduced what is known as the Kindle-killer: the Nook.
Amazon has been dominating the market of e-book reader ever since its released of Kindle in 2007. Here are five reasons to choose Nook over Amazon Kindle 2.
The largest book store chain in the U.S., Barnes & Noble, is taking a major leap in penetrating the small but fast growing market of e-book reader. With only less than 10% of U.S. adult population bought an e-book reader, this niche is predicted to become huge in the years to come and Barnes & Noble could be in the perfect timing to come in. Although the Nook is the first attempt of Barnes & Noble to take on Amazon Kindle, there are good reasons why you should get the Nook over Kindle 2. Find out the top 5 reasons….

- DISPLAY. Both devices has 6 inch electronic Ink paper display, but the Nook has dual screen. The 3.5 inch full color touchscreen just below the display is a cool feature that is used to navigate the Nook, at the same time can be a QWERTY keyboard when you need to type in or surf the internet. Kindle only got QWERTY keyboard for text input or internet surfing.
- MEMORY. Both devices has built-in 2GB of memory space that can hold up to 1500 e-books, but the Nook has a microSD slot that can expand the memory up to 16GB. It is equivalent to 17500 e-books. Kindle 2 has no expansion for additional memory. Now you might say who needs that much e-books to read? Well, that’s the same thing we said when an 80GB hard disk came out. It feels like forever to fill, but it will.
- WI-FI. The built-in Wi-Fi really gives the Nook an edge over Amazon Kindle 2. Both devices can access the internet and download e-books via the 3G network but when you are traveling outside U.S., you will find it very convenient to be able to access the internet via Wi-Fi connection. After all, portable devices are made for mobility. Barnes & Noble also offers free Wi-Fi access inside all their stores.
- RESOURCES. Amazon holds one of the largest collections of e-books that’s why it is probably fine to get them all from Amazon, the same company who sells the Kindle e-book reader. But flexibility wise, it is a plus if you can have the option to buy e-books from other sources right? The Nook, just like Sony Reader, can display e-book version from other sources like Google Books that has 1 million free public domain titles. The Nook supports ePUB format which is an open standard that most publishers use to make e-books.
- e-BOOK LENDING. The Nook allows you to share copies of your e-books to friends and family for up to two weeks as long as they have installed the Barnes & Noble e-reader application on their mobile device or personal computer. This is another great feature that can be appreciated by fanatic e-book readers.
At the time of this writing, Barnes & Noble is only accepting pre-orders of the Nook. They will start shipping by the end of November. It is expected that the Nook will boost the slow sales of Barnes & Noble together with its recent opening of e-book store last July.
For sure Amazon will come up with another good idea on their next model of Kindle. Sony will release their latest e-book reader before the end of this year and hopefully will better compete with Amazon. With all these good gadgets coming out, competition will bring better quality and features to consumers.
